Derrick Shelby-Sports Mechanix Camp Trainer

At 6 foot 3 and 255 pounds, this Houston, Texas native is a beast to contain on the defensive line. Replacing Paul Kruger at defensive end was no simple task for Shelby, but he has certainly made a name for himself.

Shelby has come a long way since arriving at Utah in 2007.  Following his Redshirt year in 2007, Shelby played in the final 12 games in 2008, starting in 10.  He was an undersized tackle, but was able to compile 31 total tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss that year.  Some of his most memorable tackles came in perhaps Utah’s biggest game of the year in 2008 against Oregon State where he had 6 tackles including a sack and forced fumble on route to Utah’s come back victory.

Shelby started and played in 10 games in 2009 before suffering a season-ending knee injury against TCU.  Though his season ended in injury, he finished with 44 total tackles and was leading Utah with 8 tackles-for-loss before the injury.

In 2010, the most anticipated return of defensive end Derrick Shelby was nothing short of exciting. Shelby had 39 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 3 pass break-ups.  At full strength for the 2011 season, Shelby will once again be a force to reckon with at the defensive end position.

Notes: Shelby was a part of the Athletic Director’s Honor roll in 2007 and 2008 as well as an Academic all-MWC member in 2009.  He is a Sociology Major and Member of the Student Athlete Mentors. He will be training youth athletes at the defensive end position for the 2011 Sports Mechanix Football Camps.
